Who doesn’t love a good waterfall? In Bali, there are several beautiful falls to choose from including Kroya, Kembar, Fucuk and the notorious Aling Aling. While Aling Aling is probably the most popular of the four, all of them are beautiful and have their own unique charms. We managed to see all four in the same day, although forewarning – the trip to reach them will likely take at least two  hours from any commercial hotel or bed and breakfast. Luckily the drive is extremely scenic and honestly just adds to the overall experience. Our driver stopped at a small pit stop near the falls and from there you can walk to the various waterfalls in the area. Our guide was a local who’d grown up in the nearby village and knew every nook and cranny of the surrounding area. On our trek to the falls we passed groves of banana trees, turmeric and clove farms and several cows bathing in the sun. We also hiked up a mountain from which you can get an amazing view of the forest. The route is definitely off the beaten path so be sure to come prepared to navigate slippery rocks and high grass. I’m a city girl at heart so this definitely made me a bit nervous at first but it’s manageable so long as you take your time and follow the guide. The hike will seem well worth it once you make it the falls. Along the way we visited a lagoon where you can take a short dip into the water. It might seem a bit sketchy but it’s deep enough to dive into. At Aling Aling you can even partake in cliff jumping if that’s your thing! The local guides will offer you a life vest in case you need one; the currents at the base of the waterfall are a bit tumultuous so I would only advise jumping if you’re a strong swimmer.

After mastering your fears at Aling Aling, you can spend some more time at the forest or overlooking the river before making the short trek back to civilization. We were exhausted by this point but thankfully the experience included a traditional Balinese lunch at a local Airbnb – which turned out to be a wooden veranda overlooking the mountains! It was a beautiful way to conclude our morning.
